This past week marked the highly anticipated return of New York City's Art Week which had been postponed for over a year and a half due to the COVID-19 pandemic. From September 9 to 12, NYC was abuzz with the return of the Armory Show and Independent Art Fair, two of the most prominent fairs in the industry. Fall is traditionally the busiest season for the art world, and this year was no exception with many art goers trying to make up for lost time.

For both the Armory and Independent, this year, in particular, was also marked with some firsts. Each fair got a makeover for their 2021 editions and both were held at new locations. The 27th Armory Show was held at the Javits Center located just several blocks away from Hudson Yards in the West Side of Manhattan. Over the last several months, the Javits Center has also functioned as a vaccination site for millions of New Yorkers. It recently underwent a makeover to accommodate the needs of the Armory.

The overall energy of both fairs was renewed excitement. People were ready to engage with work and one another in this context after fifteen months away. Despite all the anticipation, there were new protocols in place to help to ensure the safety of everyone who attended. Timed ticket entries and proof of vaccine played a huge role in both fairs. The timed entries allowed for crowd control and for fairgoers to engage with the art and one another in a more meaningful way.

This year resulted in a mix of both in-person and virtual presentations. Armory featured a massive 157 galleries from North America, Europe, and Asia. However, due to travel restrictions, fifty-five international galleries opted to show in the fair’s digital platform, Armory Online. In previous versions of the fair, modern and contemporary exhibitors were shown on two different piers but, for the first time, works were shown side by side.

While it was certainly not business as usual, the adjustments made to even be able to produce fairs on this scale during a pandemic are impressive, to say the least. Though the number of galleries participating in the Armory this year was impressive, the necessary size of the fair, sprawled across the Javits center, made the event overwhelming.

Independent was also back this year in an entirely new space. The brainchild of gallerist Elizabeth Dee, this fair has really come into its own over the last eleven years. For Independent's twelfth edition, the fair also set up shop in a new venue––the newly renovated Maritime historic building which also houses the iconic Cipriani Restaurant. With panoramic views of the Hudson River, fairgoers were treated to a new side of this exciting fair, which was the better of the two.

“It's been an exceptional fair, and we've witnessed an especially strong commitment from Independent to build a diverse public, even under the trying conditions imposed by limited international travel. It’s been a positive continuation of our past experience of the fair at its former Spring Studios location” adds Ross.

Since the onset of the fair, it has set itself apart by offering viewers a very tight and focused group of galleries on a smaller scale who are invited to participate in the proposal process. The result is a meticulously curated event in which fairgoers get the best parts of Art Week. Independent was a more manageable fair to experience featuring the work of forty-two galleries this year, compared to the fifty to sixty it normally features. This paired-down event was above and beyond what art goers have been missing over the last year and a half.

The New York-based gallery featured the work of two impressive women of color Phyllis Stephens and Genesis Tramaine. Stephens' work in particular stood out. Sciarrino's cast glass pieces—which are based on her renderings of lichen, a plant-based organism—are subtle, gorgeous, and produce hues of green, brown, and orange.

The New York City-based gallery stunned fairgoers with a solo presentation of the work of Rute Merk. Merk, a Lithuanian-born painter working out of Berlin, creates hyper-realistic canvases that are in conversation with digital culture, Eastern European social realist painting, fashion, and other influences. Merk's lush surfaces create tension between the ethereal and almost out-of-focus effect that her brush strokes achieve, and the larger, harder edges of the faceless subjects in these portraits. Her work challenges the viewer to think beyond digitized realities and pushes painting to another level.

BERKELEY SPRINGS — The Morgan Arts Council’s Ice House gallery show, “Our Voices: Perspectives of Women” is open through Sept. 8. Gallery hours are Thursday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

“Our Voices” features a wide variety of female artists from near and far, who examine the lives of women through their art. Claudia Olivos from Santiago, Chile, uses her paintings to celebrate and honor the energy of the Divine Feminine; Padma Prasad Surapureddi from Chennai, India, paints narratives inspired by the Tamil tradition of Bhakthi poetry and the sculptures found in Shiva temples. Born in Bogota, Colombia, artist Julia Vallejo studied in Fredericksburg, Va., before completing artist residencies in Italy, Mexico, and the United States. She works primarily in painting and drawing using her bare hands and feet to apply different thicknesses of paint. Dr. Maria Balibrea Melero was born in Madrid, Spain and uses watercolors or oils to present marginal monsters and other realities on canvas.

Other artists from around the region showcase their paintings, mixed media, sculptures, illustrations and fabric art. Theresa Wells Stifel uses waste and vintage ephemera papers to create bold pieces. Jane Pettit is another mixed media artist and sculptor who uses glass, stone, ceramics and found objects such as broken dishes. Fabric artist Norma Jean Brooks creates baskets, bowls, and wall art. Abbie Chessler says her painting comes from a place of emotion and surrender relating to her experiences as a woman.

“I like my own work to tell stories, ” said Curator Marily Mojica. “The artists in this group are from different origins, social and economic backgrounds who create distinct art in dissimilar styles.”

She said she wanted to give these female artists a new platform to exhibit their work, but she’s the “struggling artist” in the bunch.

“We are diverse in many ways, ” she said. “Half of the women are married. Two are openly gay. Most are self-taught. Six hold art degrees. Four own their own businesses. Julia is from Bogota, Columbia. Nicole is half Native American and half Cuban. Maria is from Spain, and I am what’s referred to as Nuyorican, born in New York to Puerto Rican parents.”

She met Krissy Whiski and Padma Surapureddi individually at exhibits in which they participated. Surapureddi’s series was of a painting where she was recording her journey from India to America.

“I fell in love with the series because I myself was working on something similar. I was journaling in my paintings, ” she said. “Toward the end of the exhibit, Pad read some of her poetry and I was mesmerized. I approached her with the idea of doing a show called ‘Art With Words, ’ but it never materialized. In my opinion, her palette is sometimes dark, yet it has a lot of vibrancy.”

“The place was loud, crowded and yet her immediate surroundings were tranquil, ” Mojica said. “She was painting as if she was the only person in the room. She was in her own creative space, and I admired her ability to do that. I see her as a free spirit; she describes herself as a “bohemian surrealist” painter. I love Krissy’s palette and her whimsical presentation. It’s like paintings of life. Her work is very pop and yet authentically Krissy. Her paintings hold power over me.”

She discovered Keiona Clark, Juliana Vallejo, Lea Craigie Marshall, Jane Pettit, and Rachel Cross at Artomatic, a multimedia arts event held in the Washington, D.C. area.

“I think of Keiona as very brave, a self-taught artist who, as a result of surviving cancer, has produced a surprising amount of good work, ” she said. “Juliana is very good at painting on a large scale. I admire her skills and the ability of her paintings to demand attention. The scale speaks to you from a distance. I also adore Jane’s sculptures. Like Juliana’s work, Jane’s sculptures also command attention. I have loved every single piece I have seen her create…bold texture, vibrant colors and great assemblage. Artist Lea Craigie Marshall always surprises me. Her creativity shows in multiple ways. She creates in many different mediums: collage, painting, sculpture, installation. As for Rachel, she has an energy I respect. She’s a lover of all things: animals, the earth, people and art. This shows in her art. I met Marcie Wolf-Hubbard and her husband at their New Year’s Eve party five years ago and discovered her work and the method of encaustics. Marcie has illustrated for magazines and books, as well as worked as a courtroom illustrator. She teaches art for the aging. I picked Marcie for this exhibition because I love the fact that although she paints nudity, it is very tastefully done.”

Among equids, the mule (jackass stallion × mare) is the most common hybrid, followed by the hinny (horse stallion × jenny). This study describes the outcome of inseminating mares and jennies with either fresh horse or donkey semen of proven fertility. Pregnancy rates in horse females were significantly higher than in donkey females, while horse and donkey males did not affect pregnancy rates. Overall, intraspecific pregnancy rates were significantly higher than interspecific ones.

Horses and donkeys differ phenotypically and karyotypically, although they can interbreed freely. Eight Standardbred mares and nine Amiata donkey jennies were included in the study. Semen was collected from two horses and two donkey stallions of proven fertility. A first pregnancy diagnosis was performed on day 10 after ovulation and repeated every day until embryo detection or until day 16. Irrespectively of the sire species, pregnancy rates in horse females (20/30, 66.7%) were significantly higher than in donkey females (19/70, 27.1%) (p < 0.05), while horse and donkey males did not affect pregnancy rates. Comparing overall intraspecific and interspecific AI, pregnancy rates were 25/37 (67.6%) and 14/63 (22.2%), respectively (p = 0.0001). The lowest pregnancy rate was obtained when inseminating jennies with horse stallion semen (8/49, 16.3%). No statistical differences were found when comparing embryo diameters, day at first pregnancy diagnosis, or in vitro embryo morphological quality among groups. In this study, much poorer results were obtained with jennies than with mares. Interspecific AI resulted in lower pregnancy rates than intraspecific Al, and AI to produce hinny hybrids resulted in the lowest pregnancy rate. Further studies are required to better understand the mechanism involved in such different outcomes in relation to intra- and interspecific breeding in domestic equids.

Mules have played an important role in military actions, for example, they were used in World Wars I and II to carry artillery, food supplies, and even wounded soldiers on the battlefield [2, 3, 4].

Due to mechanization, mules have lost their traditional role and are now used both for hippotherapy and leisure riding. However, the mule is still irreplaceable for deforestation work in inaccessible mountain areas and the management of big bovine herds, above all in South America [5]. In contrast, hinnies seem to be much less common and diffused [6, 7].
